The only thing that i knew going into this was that it was a pretty movie. I didn't want to have this be a Boy and the Heron 2.0, so I didn't expect a whole lot. Holy crap. This movie is so friken good. Every aspect (except for the plot) is really amazing. To start I just have to mention the soundtrack. It's so good. These are great songs that they used and it really matched the mood of the movie. I loved how the first and last scene were almost identical--him putting on his headphones and listening to Sunflower by Post Malone. One thing about the sound though. It was a little hard to hear the dialouge and couldn't figure out how to turn captions on. I really don't know how they were able to do it, but the animation was so good. It auctually looked like a comic book! All of the colors were great too. I also like how they gave some scenes comic book words and sounds. It was great. So beautiful. Finally. the plot. It started out very very mid. I was worried, but they really turned it around and I really enjoyed it a lot more than I expected. I really liked the combonaition of inner conflict and exterior conflict. In conclusion, this moive is very very good, and it is now in my top five. 9/10

So this Friday, Jacob and I were looking at IMDb's list of the best movies ever. This was number 4 I think. I had not seen it, but I realized that I really should have watched it. The only expectation I had for this was that it had to be very very good. And oh boy, this movie is freaking awesome.
I don't know where to start with this blog so I'll start with the beginning of the movie. The opening scene is great. They started strong and then took a step back to give his life story. By the time they got back to the scene the second time, I had forgotten it happened. I loved how there was a narrator for the whole movie. It makes it feel more personal because it continually breaks the 4th wall. I liked all of the gore and blood. It was mostly unexpected and caught you off guard. Another great thing was all of the camera shots. There is this one super cool tracking shot as he is walking into the restaurant. Another is where there is a dolly zoom at the diner. Many J and L cuts were cool as well. I also enjoyed all of the darkness when he was with the mob, but the light when he was with his family. I originally hated the romance story, but I was very surprised at how the sub-plot developed--I liked it a lot (especially when he starts cheating on her). Another amazing thing was how the plot changed drastically in the second half of the movie-- where he and Jimmy go against Paulie. I was not expecting the ending at the end, but that was so good. This is now my new number one. 9.5/10 \So I have seen Spider-Man Homecoming but I didn't like it very much. I really had no expectation for this movie. I was hoping that this would be better. It was much more than just a little better-- it was better by a lot. I think that the plot was very good, but the visual of it was simply phenomenal!
So the plot was very basic but had many sub plots. For example, he was trying to stop the Lizard, but was also trying to keep his family not worried, see his girlfriend, and be a student. Lots of complex characters, which kept your attention. There was also a big factor of dramatic irony-- we see this in the doctor turning into the lizard, but Spider-Man doesn't know. We also saw this in the character of both Peter Parker and Spider-Man. The Irony of him and the viewer knowing both identities, but everyone else not knowing. The visual element of this was amazing. All of the panoramic shots of the city were gorgeous. But the best part was all of the angles and moving camera shots of his swinging from building to building. That is unmatched. I think that is the best camera work I have seen yet. Over all, very good film. 7/10 This movie is my friend's all time favorite so I decided to watch it to see if it was all that. If I were to summarize this movie in one word, it would be "goofy." This is a very goofy movie. Like, everything about it is just childish. However, not a little kid movie because of language, and my little brother probably shouldn't have watched it with me. This treated itself like it had a budget of 5 bucks. But I think that is the point of the movie. It proved that no special effects are needed to create a dumb movie.
I really like visual movies. If I were to give a rating based off visual effects, this might be the worst movie I have seen. But that's where the visual doesn't matter. This movie convinces you that it should not be taken seriously. The opening scene they are literally talking about why they are using coconuts instead of horses. All of the non-special effects I think were done on purpose. Plotwise, this movie cold have been Indiana Jones--but it isn't I have never seen a movie that is as all over the place as this. But that's why I likened it. They broke the fourth wall. they showed little animations in between each scene, and they finally kind of tied it all up in the end. I don't know why but this movie is unique and I liked it. 8/10 |
